“And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope.” —Romans 5:3–4, NKJV
The Christian life is not a playground; it is a battleground. Following Jesus does not remove difficulties. Sometimes it places us directly in the middle of them. But God never wastes our suffering.
Paul describes a spiritual process: pressure produces perseverance, perseverance develops proven character, and character strengthens hope. Trials reveal where our strength comes from and teach us to depend more completely upon Christ.
Think of resistance training. Muscles grow because they encounter resistance. Spiritually, God can use resistance to strengthen our faith. Every difficulty becomes an opportunity to discover that His grace is sufficient and His strength greater than our weakness.
Personal application: What pressure are you facing today? Instead of asking only, “Lord, when will this end?” also ask, “Lord, what do You want to produce in me through this?” Don’t waste your trial by fighting it alone. Depend upon Christ. Today’s pressure may become tomorrow’s perseverance, character, and hope.
