“He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, ‘O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.’” — Matthew 26:39 (NKJV)
In the shadows of Gethsemane, Jesus didn’t retreat to relax, but to wrestle. Prostrate on the ground, the Sinless One faced the crushing weight of the cross and the horrors of bearing our sin.
Scholar Alfred Edersheim noted the sheer intensity of Christ’s struggle: “His prayer was that—if it were possible—the hour might pass away from him… At the close of that hour his sweat—mingled with blood—fell in great drops on the ground. And while he lay in prayer, the disciples lay in sleep.”
Jesus surrendered His will entirely to the Father’s plan. But while the Savior agonized in prayer, His closest friends drifted off in indifference.
You never need to fear surrendering to God’s will; His path is always good. But notice also that someone in your sphere may be agonizing in a trial right now—wrestling in prayer and desperate for support. You can sleep in apathy like the disciples, or you can stand in the gap beside them.
Personal Application: Put your personal will in neutral today so God can shift your direction. Look around you—who needs you to kneel beside them, hold up their arms, and carry their burden in prayer?
