What is true happiness? Ask twenty people, and you’ll get twenty different opinions. Most equate joy with bank accounts, comfort, and zero conflict.
But Jesus completely flips the world’s script in the Beatitudes.
Commentator Matthew Henry noted that Jesus came to correct our fundamental error regarding what it means to be “blessed.” To our culture, declaring the “poor in spirit”—those who recognize their utter spiritual bankruptcy before God—as happy sounds paradoxical. But in God’s kingdom, spiritual poverty is the exact starting point for true wealth.
The world sells a cheap counterfeit joy that fluctuates with your circumstances. Jesus offers a radical, unshakable blessedness rooted in eternity. You can’t experience the riches of God’s grace until you first realize how empty your hands are without Him.
Personal Application: Stop chasing the world’s version of happiness today. Take a moment to admit your complete dependence on God, surrender your self-sufficiency, and let His Spirit fill your empty hands with kingdom joy.
