“And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, ‘Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!’” — Mark 4:41 (NKJV)
Death, taxes, and stormy situations—life guarantees all three. Even while directly obeying Jesus, the disciples found themselves tossed by a violent tempest in Mark 4. Panicking, they cried out, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” (Mark 4:38, NKJV).
He cared infinitely. But He allowed the gale anyway.
Bishop J.C. Ryle observed that serving Christ doesn’t exempt us from life’s storms: “Our Savior has never promised that we shall have no afflictions. He loves us too well to promise that. By affliction He teaches us many precious lessons… draws us to the throne of grace, purifies our affections, and makes us long for heaven.”
It’s easy to praise God after the waters calm. But true faith shines when waves break over the bow, water fills the boat, and fear threatens to drown out prayer.
Nothing tests—or deepens—your faith quite like a gale. Jesus may be sleeping in the boat, but He is still the Master of the sea.
Personal Application: Are you in the middle of a squall today? Don’t mistake the storm for God’s absence. Cry out to Him in your distress, trust His sovereign power over your circumstances, and let the storm drive you closer to the Master of the winds and waves.
