Look at what is happening across our world today—the rapid acceleration of global events, the deep confusion in our culture, and the shifting geopolitical landscape. People everywhere are desperately searching for answers. They are looking for stability, for truth, and for certainty. But as Bible-believing followers of Jesus Christ, we do not look to the news media, to secular philosophy, or to human leaders for our ultimate direction. We look to the unchanging, authoritative, and living Word of Almighty God!
The Word Became Flesh
Let’s turn together to the Gospel of John, chapter one:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, ‘This was He of whom I said, “He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.” ‘ And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.” (John 1:1-18)
This opening passage is of such immense depth that we must unpack it carefully. The Holy Spirit inspired John to reveal a breathtaking truth: Jesus is none other than God’s creative, life-giving, and light-bearing Word. He is the very power of God that brought the universe into existence and the wisdom of God that sustains it, now stepped into human history in bodily form.
The Creator of All Things
Look specifically at verse three:
“All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” (John 1:3)
Why does John place such a heavy emphasis on Jesus as the agent of creation? Because in his day, a dangerous heresy known as Gnosticism was creeping in. Gnostics took a philosophical approach to faith, claiming that simple belief was insufficient. They taught that matter was inherently evil and flawed, while God was pure spirit. Because they believed pure spirit could never touch physical matter, they invented a system of spiritual intermediaries—distant emanations—one of which supposedly created the world. They even went so far as to separate the Creator from the loving Father of the New Testament.
The Holy Spirit inspired John to blow that false teaching out of the water. Scripture consistently affirms that Jesus is the active Creator of all that exists.
- The Apostle Paul writes: “For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.” (Colossians 1:16)
- Paul speaks again of the Lord Jesus Christ, “through whom are all things, and through whom we live.” (1 Corinthians 8:6)
- The writer of Hebrews declares that God spoke through His Son, “through whom also He made the worlds.” (Hebrews 1:2)
From this, the Bible establishes two foundational truths:
- Creation out of nothing: God created all things, and His original creation was perfectly good. Genesis 1:31 tells us, “Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.” The world was not made by an inferior deity, nor did it begin with a structural flaw. Behind all of creation stands God alone.
- God’s direct involvement: This is God’s world, and He remains intimately involved in it. What is broken in our world today is not the fault of the Creator; it is the direct result of human sin. Redemption is God actively reaching down to reclaim that which was always rightfully His.
Life Found Only in Him
John continues in verse four:
“In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:4)
Life (zōē) is a central theme throughout this gospel. John wrote his account so that “you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:31).
When Scripture speaks of life in Jesus, it is not merely talking about physical existence. Without Christ, a person merely exists; they do not truly live.
- Life over condemnation: Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.” (John 5:24)
- The Father’s desire: The living God sent His Son so that we might experience true life, restoring the fellowship broken by sin.
- The quality of eternal life: The word for eternal (aionios) points to a specific quality of life—the very life of God Himself. It is a life marked by His love, joy, peace, and power, beginning the moment you trust in Him.
How do we enter into this life? By placing our faith in Jesus Christ. Scriptural belief is not just agreeing with facts in your head; it is the complete trust of your heart. It means taking Jesus at His word, acknowledging Him as God the Son, and submitting your life to His command.
The Light That Overcomes Darkness
Jesus declared Himself to be the light of the world, and His light does three vital things in our lives:
- It dispels chaos: Just as God spoke light into the dark emptiness of Genesis 1, Jesus shines into the chaotic darkness of our hearts, bringing order, peace, and purpose.
- It reveals truth: Light exposes what is hidden. Jesus strips away our self-righteousness and disguises, helping us see ourselves clearly so that we recognize our deep need for His forgiveness.
- It guides our steps: Without Him, we stumble in the dark. With Jesus, the path forward becomes clear, ending our aimless wandering and granting true direction.
Practical Application & Challenge for Believers
Church, if the living Word made all things, holds all things together, and offers the light of life, then we must align our daily walk with that reality:
- Anchor your mind in the Word daily: Stop letting the chaos of the news cycle or the noise of culture dictate your peace. Open the Bible every morning, read it chapter by chapter, and let God’s truth establish your daily direction.
- Examine your heart in His light: Ask the Lord to reveal any areas of compromise, hidden sin, or self-reliance. Step out of the shadows and let His grace cleanse and restore you.
- Walk as children of light: Live intentionally in your workplace, your family, and your community. Share the truth of Jesus with those who are groping in spiritual darkness.
An Invitation to Life
If you are reading this today and you do not know Jesus Christ, know this: God loves you deeply. John 3:16 reminds us, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
You cannot fix your life on your own, and your good works cannot wash away sin. But Jesus came to this earth, lived a perfect life, and voluntarily shed His precious blood on the cross to pay the complete penalty for your sin. When He died, He took your place. And when God raised Him bodily from the dead on the third day, Jesus was declared with power to be God, Savior, and Lord over all!
Through His shed blood, you can be forgiven. Through His resurrection, you can be granted brand-new, eternal life.
You don’t have to clean yourself up first. Right now, right where you are, you can turn from your sin and place your trust in Him. Simply pray from your heart:
“Lord Jesus, I acknowledge that I am a sinner in need of a Savior. I believe that You shed Your blood on the cross for my sins and that You rose from the dead. I ask You to forgive me, to come into my life, and to be my Lord and Savior. I yield my life to You today.”
If you call upon the name of the Lord in true faith, He promises to receive you, forgive you, and grant you the right to become a child of God. Step out of the darkness and into His light today.
