Never have there been more widespread and bitter attacks on biblical Christianity than there are today; but likewise never have the scientific evidences for the divine origin and truth of the Bible been so clear and strong. The evidences discussed in this section are mostly practical and objective rather than philosophical or experience-oriented. My conviction, of course, is that every word of the Bible is true, inspired of God and absolutely free of error (refer to the Manuscript section). Additionally, there are today thousands of scientists, not to mention multitudes of Christian believers in all walks of life who hold similar convictions. There is, indeed, good and sufficient evidence of the truth of God’s Word for all who are willing to consider it.
No matter how overwhelming the evidence is, it will never convince a person who has already hardened their heart against the truth. You see, the rejection of Jesus Christ is rarely a problem of the intellect; it is a problem of the heart and the human will. It is almost never a case of “I cannot believe,” but rather, “I will not believe.”
Throughout my years of ministry and teaching, I have observed that when people turn their backs on Jesus, the Messiah, it usually comes down to three root issues:
- Ignorance: A deliberate, often self-imposed blindness to the truth, just as Paul describes in the Epistle to the Romans, chapter one, verses eighteen through twenty-three, and as Jesus spoke of in the Gospel According to Matthew, chapter twenty-two, verse twenty-nine.
- Pride: An unwillingness to humble oneself, surrender control, and acknowledge the need for a Savior, which Jesus confronted directly in the Gospel According to John, chapter five, verses forty through forty-four.
- Moral Compromise: A love for sin and darkness rather than the light of God’s holiness, as revealed in the Gospel According to John, chapter three, verses nineteen and twenty.
Many people try to hide their rejection of the Bible behind sophisticated “intellectual objections.” But when you strip away the excuses, the bottom line is clear: they simply do not want to yield their lives to the Lord because of pride or a desire to hold on to their sin.
Jesus gives us a powerful spiritual key in the Gospel According to John, chapter seven, verse seventeen: “If anyone wants to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority.”
If a person approaches the claims of Jesus Christ with a genuine, honest heart—desiring to know the truth and willing to follow Him if it is true—God will open their eyes. They will know! But if you come with a closed mind and a rebellious spirit, expecting God to prove Himself on your terms, you will remain in darkness. Blaise Pascal, the great French philosopher, put it well when he noted that the evidence for God is more than compelling, yet those who insist they have no need of Him will always invent ways to discount His offer.
My urgent plea to you is simple: do not let pride or culture rob you of eternity. Examine the evidence with an open mind, an open heart, and a willingness to surrender to the truth.
