Genesis Chapter 46

We find ourselves at a pivotal moment in the life of Jacob—now called Israel. It is a season of massive transition. He is leaving the Land of Promise, the only home he has known for decades, to head into the unknown of Egypt.

As we look at Genesis 46, we see a beautiful picture of how God shepherds His people through the “in-between” moments of life.

I. Seeking the Lord at the Crossroads (Genesis 46:1-7)

Jacob begins his journey, but notice where he stops: Beersheba. This wasn’t just a geographical pitstop; it was a spiritual landmark. This was where his grandfather Abraham called on the name of the Lord and where his father Isaac built an altar.

Before Jacob leaves the land, he stops to worship. He needed to know: “Lord, is this really You? Is it okay to leave the land of the promise to go to Egypt?” God meets him there in the visions of the night. This is the last recorded time God speaks to Jacob, and He says, “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make of you a great nation there. I will go down with you… and I will also surely bring you up again.” What a comfort! God doesn’t just send us; He accompanies us. He promises Jacob a peaceful end, telling him that his beloved son Joseph would be the one to close his eyes at the moment of his death. Our God is a God of details. He cares for your heart just as much as He cares for His global redemptive plan.

II. The Family of Promise (Genesis 46:8-27)

Here, the Scripture records a detailed genealogy. To our modern eyes, these lists of names can seem tedious, but to God, they are precious. This is the “roll call” of those entering the “incubator” of Egypt.

There were sixty-six who traveled with him, totaling seventy when including Joseph’s family already there. God was tracking every soul. Not one person was forgotten. In the same way, the Lord knows your name, your lineage, and your struggles. You are not just a number in a crowd; you are a child of the Covenant.

III. The Joyful Reunion and Divine Protection (Genesis 46:28-34)

Finally, the moment arrives in the land of Goshen. Can you imagine the scene? Joseph, the second most powerful man in the world, jumps in his chariot and rushes to meet his father. He falls on Jacob’s neck and weeps for a good long while.

But notice the wisdom in their placement. They settled in Goshen.

Egyptians despised shepherds. By being shepherds, Israel’s family was “quarantined” in the best pasture land, kept separate from the pagan influences and idolatry of the Egyptian court. God used the world’s prejudice to protect His people’s purity. He kept them in Goshen until they were strong enough to return and possess the land.

Practical Application: Walking by Faith

  1. Stop at “Beersheba”: When you face a major life decision—a move, a new job, a relationship—don’t rush past the altar. Seek the Lord’s face. Wait for His “Do not be afraid” before you cross the border into a new season.
  2. Trust the Divine “Incubator”: Sometimes God puts us in places where we feel isolated or even “despised” by the world. Understand that He may be using that isolation to grow you, protect you, and prepare you for a future victory.

A Challenge for the Believer

Are you trying to direct your own steps, or are you submitted to the Shepherd? Jacob was an old man, yet he was still willing to move his entire life at the word of God. I challenge you today to surrender your “map” to the Lord. Let Him decide the destination, and trust that if He leads you there, His presence will go with you.

An Invitation to New Life

Perhaps you feel like you are in a “spiritual Egypt”—a place of bondage, wandering, or emptiness. You may be trying to find peace through your own efforts, but the Bible tells us that true peace only comes through one Person.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, looked at our lost condition and chose to “go down” into our world. He didn’t just come to teach; He came to save. He shed His precious blood on the cross to pay the full price for your sins. He was buried, but three days later, He rose again! That resurrection is the shout of God that Jesus is truly Savior, Lord, and God.

The blood of Jesus is the only thing that can wash away your past and give you a future. Will you trust Him today?
