Week of August 16

“These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.” —Acts 17:11, NKJV

Paul encountered jealousy in Thessalonica, skepticism in Athens, and opposition in Corinth. But Berea was different. The people listened eagerly—and then opened their Bibles.

The Bereans were called “fair-minded” because they combined two important qualities: an openness to hear truth and a willingness to examine it. They did not blindly accept Paul’s teaching simply because he was an apostle. They compared what he said with Scripture.

That is healthy faith. Biblical Christianity does not require us to abandon reason or accept everything a teacher says. God invites us to investigate His truth and measure every teaching by His Word.

Notice that the Bereans searched the Scriptures “daily.” They developed a lifestyle of biblical examination.

Personal application: Be a Berean. Listen carefully, but verify biblically. Open God’s Word every day with a receptive mind and searching heart. Then, when Scripture reveals the truth, believe it, obey it, and live accordingly.
