“Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: ‘Hosanna! “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”‘” — Mark 11:9 (NKJV)
Jesus entered Jerusalem to a hero’s welcome—palm branches and roaring crowds. Yet within days, the shouts of “Hosanna!” turned into screams of “Crucify Him!”
The mob wanted a political conqueror to overthrow Rome, missing the ultimate reason He came: to lay down His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45).
Reformer Martin Luther noted the humility of the procession, writing: “Christ, king of heaven and earth, was seen sitting upon a lowly donkey… He reserved one thing for himself, which no human creature or angel could do. Namely, to conquer death and sin.”
Jesus’ true victory wasn’t a temporal scepter, but an empty tomb.
As His follower, you may be misunderstood, overlooked, or unappreciated by the world. But earthly applause is fleeting. You aren’t serving for a ticker-tape parade; you are living for the Master’s final approval.
Personal Application: Stop seeking the applause of the crowd today. Live faithfully for an audience of One, knowing that His “Well done!” will make every earthly reward pale in comparison.
