“But these are the ones sown on good soil, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.” — Mark 4:20 (NKJV)
You can’t plant thistles and expect to reap roses, nor will oak trees flourish in a desert. Harvest always depends on both the seed and the soil.
In Mark 4, the divine Seed—God’s living Word—is perfect. The patient Sower—Jesus—is faithful. The missing variable in the yield is the condition of the human heart.
Preacher Alexander Maclaren observed that no one is destined by temperament or circumstance to remain hard, rocky, or thorny ground: “The true acceptance of the Word requires that we… cherish the word of truth in our deepest hearts, guard it against foes, let it rule there, and mold our conduct to its principles.”
When you hide God’s Word in your heart (Psalm 119:11), fruitfulness naturally follows. But if you allow shallow emotions, worldly distractions, or unchecked desires to crowd out the truth, spiritual growth stalls.
God provides the Seed and sends the Sower, but only you can prepare the soil.
