Fresh off His wilderness temptation, Jesus was ready to launch His public ministry. Where would He begin? Jerusalem, the religious hub? His hometown of Nazareth?
He chose Capernaum—a neglected area known as “Galilee of the Gentiles,” historically battered by foreign invaders and spiritual apathy.
Scholar G. Campbell Morgan observed that when God acts in redemption, He goes straight to where darkness is greatest. Jesus didn’t start where light was already abundant; He brought the dawn directly into the pitch-black night.
Flashlights are useless in broad daylight, but shine one into a dark corner, and everything changes. Jesus intentionally launched His rescue mission in the darkest place possible because that’s where His light shines brightest.
Personal Application: Where is your Capernaum today? It might be an unchurched workplace, an isolated neighbor, or a chaotic household. Don’t pull back from dark places in fear. Step into them bold in faith, knowing that the darker the room, the brighter Christ’s light shines through you.
